Audible Porno is a beatboxer from Devon who after starting as a DJ has developed his beatboxing to such a level that he can enthral a crowd and has appeared on the same stage as Guru, Blade and Jehst etc. Now he has hooked up with the UK wide collective that forms the Covert Recordings label and is set to unleash some of his material. I have been lucky enough to hear his six track demo that his is sending out at present and can confirm that, indeed Audible Porno is indeed a K-9's dangle berries.

The demo gets going as he Audible Porno kicks a quick spin through the FM dial dropping different tracks as the dial lands on a different station and inserting the white noise as the dial is retuned. He then stops on a station playing his stuff and he sets off producing a series of live beats interspersed with vocal snippets, bass lines and melodies etc. This dude certainly has skill and handles his beat transitions well, even adding in echoes which reduce in volume each time as the real thing would. He is capable of dropping some very speedy beats and manages to fit in all of the drum sounds. He is not quite as proficient at producing two or three sounds at the same time as some beatboxers can, but regardless he hides this well and is able to sing and produces beats at the same time, most notably a rendition of Bug A Boo and to round off the opening five minute intro his version of Salt & Pepa's Push it.

The second track is quite a clubby affair with a bouncing beat over which AP adds scratches and a whole manner of other vocal effects. This is like a DJ track of old, and whilst I'm not totally taken with the idea of having a human beatbox replicate what a DJ might do over an instrumental Audible Porno makes it sound nice and ultimately whether it is listenable or not is the test and this is!

For track three AP has overdubbed a beat with his trumpet pattern and scratches in well known phrases such as 'step up if you want to get hurt', and 'break it down like this' etc. The guys skill is undeniable and I particularly like it when he drops a rhythm and melody at the same time. Track four starts off particularly manically and is more up tempo than the other tracks. This is more of a dance effort with unique frog croak sounds as well as a resonating bass. For me the be sounds like what he usually does, but speeded up and not overly tailored to the genre of music being replicated here. This is obvious beatbox music rather than a replication of another instrumental sound.

Track 5 sees AP drop more scratches over his own mouth generated beat and some of the scratches are astoundingly accurate. In some respects it is hard to listen to this much beatbox as I feel it definitely works better either in a live situation or in addition to MCs or other instrumentation. Audible Porno's finale is indeed a big beat on which he puts to use his amazing ability for sound effects including echoes, reverbs and choruses etc. Bleeps and rings are seamlessly bended with the snare heavy beat to form a rather impressive and original sounding instrumental.

All told this guy is new to me, but he appears to have a desire to get out there and with the right hook uos should be looking to be the new generation after Kela and Schlomo et al. Look out for Audible Porno...
