Choong Family - More Mirkin CD [Gridlockaz]
Choong Family
Tracklisting:
01. More Mirkin
02. Pain Don't Stop
03. More Mirkin (Remix)
The new generation of Brixtonians are getting busy and the good looking Choong Family are set to be at the forefront of this new wave. Hip Hop is really everywhere around you and there are cats with skills for days who are simply getting overlooked everyday. The verses spat by Choong need to be felt by a wider audiences as on their opening track More Mirkin they have a hyper vibe which should have any dance floor getting rowdy. The timpani and trumpet fanfare, big beat and acid type bass make for an upbeat stormer which the MCs only enhance.

Everyone has a video on Channel U at the moment, but that is probably a good thing. The Choong Family are the same and it was the screening of More Mirkin on the TV that let to Choice FM and the Industry Lockdown DVD giving then good reviews.

They can also do a slushy RnB vibe, but I don't feel they are really feeling that style of theirs. This is partly because their press says that they put this Pain Don't Stop track on the single to prove that they, 'can take the rough with the smooth'. They keep the lyrics and delivery hard and really this feels a bit like two tracks cobbled together as the violin loop and heartfelt singing taking the track down a more R Kelly route than the MOP type verses. Despite this the track grows on you, maybe I just felt that the singing wasn't strong enough to begin with. The production is a bit thin, but it is an evocative piece which is a bit more cerebral. Apparently there is also a video in production which is being made by a BBC crew who upon hearing the track said that they must be part of the video's film crew.

To close off the CD is a remix of the More Mirkin track which whilst it stands up on its own I feel it has lost some of the vibe and energy of the original. Strange that feeling as this has a more old skool Marl Marl type vibe with its big snare pattern and repetitively sequenced stab and periodic high tone which might have appealed to me more. The flows are still made to fit the beat and is still a strong version.

Overall then, this is really only two tracks and it is hard to know what a more in depth look at this click would reveal. Here at least they have dropped a heavy debut and shown that they have both the production and some severe MCing abilities as well as an ear for a good track, so I'll be looking out to see what materialises as this crew develop in their careers.
