Dap-C - Walking In The Rain CD [N.G.U.]

Dap C who formerly had the intensely personal, but slightly disappointing LP Character Building out on the Sin Nombre label back at the beginning of 2003 when he was released from the clink, has now hooked up with the NGU label and for what is their second release. First came Eyezofman & A-Bomb and now Dap C drops the double A sided single which features both radio and street versions of Walking In The Rain and the appropriately titled Just the B-Side in September.

So Dap hits us off with Walking In The Rain which features The BC of the label's in-house N.G.U. Crew. The production makes use of a speeded up high pitched soul sample which seems rather derivative and like painting by numbers. Regardless producer Mike S from Hard Livin' has his finger on the pulse and provides the canvas for Dap's intricate verbal paintings. Dap certainly raps with enthusiasm, an improvement on his previous limp delivery, about his plans to make it big when he started out in Newcastle, but there is something about him and this track which just doesn't grab me. BC does uplift the trackwith his Manc tones, but by this time I was already ready to fast forward. Te CD also includs the video for this track which sees Dap taking a ride in a limo, rapping in front of Newcastle's famous bridge and the Angel Of The North as well as packing out a club in Leicester and covering the Manchester back streets for BC's verse.

Just The B-Side again has a guest MC, namely Beads again of the N.G.U. Crew and it seems Dap is keen to bring his breadrins through. Again though Beads does outshine Dap on the mic. This track has a different production outfit behind the boards, namely newcomers D&H production, who hail from Leicester and put together a big sounding syth stab driven composition.

This release is the opening shot from a rejuvenated Dap C who is preparing the groundwork for his forthcoming long player The Boy Who Cried Wolf, but before that is available you can head over to the NGU website and download a free mixtape.
