This is another act I have been meaning to tell you about for quite a while. GeJay (pronounced GeeJay) is one part of the new wave of British rap talent. He could be likened to a prodigy putting out this material at the tender school age of 15 and after listening to his raps and song writing skills you will understand why as he writes way beyond his age. The Sunderland born rapper is setting about making a name for himself after penning all his lyrics, co-producing his material and getting it out there in the North West.

Being a youngster GeJay cities his influences as nu skool acts including: Tupac, Dre, Eminem and DMX. These artists have inspired the 15 year old to get into Hip Hop and formed the foundations for his artistic persona and ensured that he employs creative song writing talents.

GeJay has created a media buzz with local newspapers and radio stations supporting him. Not only has the local interest been huge but he has also attracted some attention from London and the US. American magazine H.E.E.T. has done a featured the youngster.

Starting to put his name out independently GeJay is not waiting around for any labels who if they sleep will miss out on this talent. Through his hard work he is building a small, but expanding fan base. In the past year GeJay's main showcase was at the "Sunderland Music Awards" which was held at The "Manor Quay" on 24th April 2003. This event attracted almost one thousands professionals from the industry and Sunderland music scene and hopefully GeJay will stick in their minds. The MC also got through to the semi finals of Urban Voice in the Most Outstanding Performer category and made the final of the OXY DJ competition. GeJay battled it out as the North East representative in the final at Sound in Leicester Square.

GeJay has been up to several things recently such as working with his new producer from Nottingham, Produkt aka Paul Fisher and they both found each other easy to work with. This was to lead to a hook up with The Slaughter House Crew, but since then there has been a restructure with Produkt leaving. Never the less he has done six tracks with this producer and they are absolutely banging. Five are featured on the Game Iz Mine Demo.

Across the five tracks GeJay and Produkt together have produced a tasty morsel. It is quality all the way through with no filler material. The opener The Game Iz Mine is a boomer built for bumping loud, made from some synth guitar and has a kind funky bass line. Of course GeJay sounds young and has a voice a touch higher that would sound better down an octave, but with time I reckon he'll deepen up a touch. 'm not really feeling the cuts which sound kinda fake on this. Standing In The Shadows takes the set to the ext level though. The production  features a tremendous vocal sample and GeJay gets busy in a more invigorated manner. This track is all about the hook, but Fox one of GeJay's crew also features and smashes the final verse after the long bridge.

There is some small skits between the tracks and the demo moves along smoothly. Prodigy is where GeJay boasts about how far he as got at such a young age. The production is simplistic and repetitive featuring a looped string, but at the same time it is pretty effective with the pumping kick keeping the beat. Fox again appears, but this time to only provide some back up vox. We Got The Venom wasn't my fave and is about as far from grimey sampled beats that I like. This one is all a bit too clean for my tastes, but at the same time it does manage to have a grove which GeJay s able to utilise in his flow. The final track 1 Chance 1 Wish opens with the familiar Air Raid Siren. This pace is slowed down or a pretty deep and meaningful story rap in which GeJay is able to twist his flow around the emotional beat provided by Produkt.

Working with Ron Angus from Studio One GeJay has just finished recording his first album Out With A Bang. The album was due to be released in late 2003, but I'm not sure if it has seen the light of day yet. Graham's new tracks have also been sent to Sony records as they have requested his new material after seeing him perform live in April. So fingers crossed.
