The Individual Minds crew consists of
three lyricists Feder, Kraze Jae & Tuffnail with production duties
held down by D.J. Flip. Flip would probably be the first to tell you
that he is a complete QPR nut and lifetime season ticket holder, but
this is about the music and not the football. The crew first got
together with this set of members back at the beginning of 2001 after
D.J. Flip heard Feder spitting lyrical darts at the Fresh 2000 event in Birmingham.
Suitably impressed with what he had just witnessed Flip made contact
and was soon hooked up by Feder with the other members of the crew who
were already formed as a unit. The MCs were serious about the business
and had already put together a self financed demo CD entitled 'The Sickness'
back in 1999.
Immediately DJ Flip connected and they were soon working together on a
number of tracks which includes the tracks available on their Verbal
Executions 12" and other as yet unreleased tracks like 'Monies',
'F.T.O.B.' and 'After A Hard Day's Work'. What had initially looked
like it would just be an EP project that DJ Flip could work on in
between his work with the MUD Family quickly grew and soon it was
evident that there was much more material to be developed than just
that. A decision was taken to expanded into an album project and full time band.
The fruits of this direction are starting to show themselves now.
So far the Individual Minds have three singles lined up for release on
what I believe is DJ Flip's own independent label - Self Destruct Music
which are all scheduled for release later this year, and which,
avoiding any hiccups, should be followed by the album 'The Underbelly Of The Underground'
sometime in the autumn, but more realistically it is more likely to be
winter time next year. The first single is the 'Verbal Executions'
12" which is out right now and includes the tracks 'Verbal Execution'
which features Denmark's D.J. Noize on the cut in the chorus.
Production consists of a drum machine beat pattern and a repetitive
orchestral horn riff. Each MC takes a verse to spit over. 'Seen' again
features all the MCs and dub style echo effects make up the music
along with a downbeat multi instrument chord and similarly unfunky
beat pattern. The final track the Feder debut solo track 'The
Walter' in which he relates to us his disdain for American sounding UK
MCs and talkes about the everyday life experiences that affect him.
Production is low key and perhaps an area that generally needs a bit
of work. The Walter, which I haven't yet worked out the meaning of
also features cuts by DJ Kaos. Each M.C. in Individual Minds will showcase a solo debut on each of the three singles planned for release this year.
The Individual Minds recently performed two live shows, one at 'The Rocket' and
the other at 'The Scala' in London. Apparently, after each of these shows IDM received a lot of
interest from
those underground Radio D.J.s and hip-hop heads who were in attendance. It is
their hope to build on this experience with as much live work this year as possible.
The demo version of Verbal Execution was featured on the HHC front cover compilation CD
for August 2002.
As the Individual Minds say themselves, "THE REVOLUTION IS BEING RECORDED RIGHT
NOW".
Feder is true old skool and originally started out as a breaker when
he was listening to Electro music. He was also an accomplished writer
who had devastated British Transport and proving his multi-talents he
also learned to beatbox after hearing the Fat Boys, Dougie Fresh, Biz
Markie and Cool Rock Cee. In the early 90's he would step up at the
Wag or The Alley, and has steadily been building to getting his shit
out there.
DJ Flip has a whole heap
of other stuff going on apart from his Individual Minds stuff. There
is his work with the MUD Fam, and he can be found playing regularly at
Scratch and his own club night - Asylum and has even been known to
direct the odd music video. He can also be heard broadcasting to
London twice per week. Peep the following shows
on Itch 105.15 FM (London area only):
- Thursdays 6pm-8pm 'Flip Da
Skript' radio
show
- Sundays 1am-3am Self Destruct Sunday Session
Interestingly on the last Sunday of each month
Flip has the plan to broadcast two full 45minute mixes for you to tape
and he'll be supplying full artwork available for download off the
website, which you can print off for your cassette boxes.
