Producer Tom Szirtes aka The Aesthetic Penguin is better known for his work in the broken-beat and nu-jazz scene as Shur-I-kan releasing records on the genre-defying world respected Freerange imprint.

Born in Hertfordshire, son of a Hungarian father and an English mother, Tom started learning the piano at the tender age of six years old and was already playing semi-professional in local jazz bands before leaving school. A stint in Bristol studying computer science during the 90’s opened his ears to the sounds of then burgeoning drum’n’bass and trip-hop scene and set the catalyst for Tom’s move to the bright lights of London.

In London, Tom quickly found himself a sought-after session player performing in venues such as Jazz Café, Ronnie Scott’s and the Forum. However Tom’s real love was writing and producing his own material – blending jazz, hip-hop, ambient and dance-music into an exotic feast. Tom was soon spotted by renowned international DJ/Producer Tom Middleton - a relationship started that brought the track “Niomi’s Dream” to release on Middleton’s legendary “Jedi’s Night Out” album.

Introduced to Freerange records, the release of the debut album “Advance” in 2001 seemed like a natural move and was received with much critical acclaim winning many fans including LTJ Bukem, Pete Lawerence (Big Chill) and Mixmaster Morris. The following years have seen Tom DJing and performing live around the world from Tokyo and the USA to Moscow whilst producing the follow-up Shur-I-kan album “Waypoints” due for release this year.

Tom first met Andrew (HKB:FiNN) whilst working with Drum’n’Bass diva JB Rose, and a rapport developed that led to Tom sharing co-production credits on HKB:FiNN’s debut album “Vitalistics” on Son Records. This was seen as the experiment that led to the formation of the HumbleBeez concept, of which this is the first album.
