GeJay - The Rock CD [Demo]
Gejay - The Rock CD
Tracklist:
01. The Rock
02. Look Around
03. Prodigy Pt.2
After we introduced you to GeJay things have moved on a touch and he is putting the finishing touches to his debut album, now entitled The Broken Instrument. Still only 16 this youngster is poised for large things, especially when we consider his The Rock track won some Ras Kwame presented 1 Xtra competition entitled 100% Homegrown Cuts which was voted for by the listening public. This latest demo offing from Gejay gets started with that track which has a touch of bounce, the south and some sickening show stopping double paced flows. GeJay, from Sunderland, who is doing his bit to make sure there is life in rap outside of London, has been working with his main producer Produkt, who is from Nottingham. They have been working together for two years now and it is Produkt's compositions which should be partly credited with helping GeJay sound so good. This first beat is a stormer and does over shadow Look Around which follows.

Look Around sounds a bit empty when contrasted with the raucous sound of the opener. It starts off with some chatting before a somewhat quantised beat and really a track which doesn't offer much in terms of groove or funk. For this track GeJay spits with a stylised flow, which although tailored to the beat, just adds to the jerky nature of the track and this one was not particularly doing it for me.

This demo is rounded off with Prodigy Pt.2 in which GeJay follows on from the original Prodigy track which appeared on his The Game Iz Mine CD. For this The Prodigy track GeJay has saved up some of his flex and together with Produkt offer an improvement on the turgid Look Around, but The Rock remain the outstanding track on this CD. Again modern sounding and clubby, this more upbeat sound seems to suit GeJay's delivery and the track sounds better for this. GeJay perhaps sounds a touch more mid Atlantic than he used to and for me this is a bit of a step backward as for me representing your location is one of the main tenants of Hip Hop.

GeJay is at the present time looking forward to the 28th April 05 when he is slated to perform on a nationally televised talent show in the US and represent for the UK. He is hoping that this exposure can help him build on the already good industry response he has received to date. GeJay's main website is at the present time being revamped, so for the time being you can check out some of his material over here: http://www.soundclick.com/gejay.
