Styly Cee - Want Whats Yours / Once And For All 7" [Son]

Son are back in effect with a whole flurry of releases set for the summer of 2004. Long time Son affiliate Styly Cee of the Lost Island crew returns from his hiatus with a slamming 7 inch which contains two tacks and some top notch guests. The A Side - Want Whats Yours is a deep tale of people who are struggling to survive with less than some of us or who have severe problems like medical issues. With the elections just having taken place it is especially poignant that people still feel the need to speak on these topics as the Non-Confrmists on You Know What They Say. The first verse examines a wife who is cheated on and chooses to take out her frustrations by writing it down. She is lucky as the tables turn for her. Nottingham's Scorzila who as apparently turned his back on rapping appears here having recorded the lyrics before his retirement. He has yet to disappoint on anything he has recorded and comes correct on this as well. Styly Cee's tasteful production employs an tender piano and nicely played female vocal sample. The rolling drums complete the mix which you can tell has been crafted by someone who has been doing this for over six years. To top it all off are some well chosen vocal cuts which make for a classic Hip Hop track.

On the B side Norwich's DPF returns after his eye-opening debut EP Mental Floss, also on Son, which astounded many listeners and his awesome appearance on Ghost's EP on Breakin Bread. This track should be no different. After opening with a whole load of swearing, it is break-neck from the first heavy beat as DPF blurts out words rapid fire style. Deepyeff employs his his trademark multi-syllabic punch lines which a whole heap of character. The production on this is more simplistic with the funky drum break loop and deep bass being the main instruments.

So, two banging tracks with Styly Cee taking on the role of the producer only. He can do this well, the first track being as deep and mellow as you like. On the other hand Once and for All has energetic cutting over a set of ripe drums and a punctual bass. Despite the fact that this is only a 7" when instrumentals would probably have been appreciated by many this should become a bit of sought after item as collectors will seek it for its rarity value. Pick it up.
