Make Way For The Great
The Poisoned Pen is based in Poole, Dorset and has been an emcee for about four years, but he has listened to Hip Hop since age 11. He believes that an emcee should use his or her own voice and should use their platform to convey a message or at least entertain the listener. Amongst his influences are Braintax, Phi Life Cypher and Canibus etc. The Poisoned Pen has had a verse printed in HHC magazine for the ‘Shady Verses’ competition and he is hoping to get some live play at a local open mic night. He would also like to get the funding to launch his own label to promote other artists.

When we asked the Poised Pen about his music he said, 'I make music that I would like to hear, straight Hip Hop, all lyrics are self-written and is produced and arranged by Reach for the Stars, it is recorded on basic equipment at home and we have had no studio time so far'.

He is progressing now and has got together his five track Make Way For The Great demo EP which he is hawking around. It is quite short at only 5 tracks all of which are under 3 minutes in duration and two of which are under 1.5 minutes long. However this is a good thing as it keep the CD moving along and quickly gives the listener a cross section of the artists ability. Still very much requiring higher production levels this showcase shows the Poisoned Pens semi poetic rhyming skills. The mix needs a bit of work to bring the tracks together and the recording needs a touch of work to eliminate the occasional popping on the vocals. The Poisoned Pen also needs to try and add more flows into his delivery which is somewhat breakneck on occasion. However the Poisoned Pen has obviously thought about his lyrics and has the ability to rap to a topic in a clearly understandable manner in his own accent. He comes across in an intelligent manner and this little showcase's lyrical content is to be commended.

The Poisoned Pen is obviously starting out in the recording game and is not yet the finished article, but with the determination to develop his sound and flows he is set to advance. So too is Reach For The Stars who is on production. The basis of the tracks is there, but there is a distinct ploddyness to the drums which need much more groove. All in this demo gives you an idea of the potential that is the Poisoned Pen.
