Starch Music
Starch Music is a collaboration of artists, a complete Hip Hop crew featuring MC's, DJ's Writers and Artists. To put it simply they state that they 'make Hip Hop they like', which doesn't include formulaic pop sounding synth beats. All their beats are lovingly hand crafted in their South London lairs. They admit that they have influences, but at the same time they also strive to be innovative, or as they put it their work involves, 'artistic expression, manipulating genres and formats'. The group of like minded individuals first got together in 2001 and have put down the foundations. There is a 10 track sampler of beats on CD, all of them are sweet loops and have individual vibes. Crates have been raided and harps, stabs, gentle rolling melodies and a whole load of other well selected sounds, vocal snippets and sighs etc. show that these heads are on my sort of level. The drums are fat and most of the instrumentals just ready for some MCs to do them justice. Others need a bit of work or remixing, but overall the beats are of a high standard.

I would suggest that Starch's production has more of a jazzy / melodic vibe rather than real hardcore boom bap. The only thing I think needs a bit of work is the loops which could on occasion be tightened up a little to fall more in time, but we are talking milliseconds here so it is fine tuning really. Their latest project, I'm informed, is going to demonstrate all their skills. They are going to be recording with TMF and DJ Blakey and soul vocalist Toyin. Overall their aim is to bring listeners broad ranged records that people can relate and enjoy listening to.
